Roatan septic systems

Welcome to Roatan's only self contained sewage treatment system - Biodigester

How does a Biodigester work?

Air is blown into the BIODIGESTER by an electrically powered compressor mounted normally within 10 metres of the sewage treatment plant. The air is diffused from the bottom of the central chamber. This increased oxygen supply accelerates the activity of the naturally occurring micro-organisms which degrade the solids to a clear effluent and a non toxic sludge.

Plastic Media The plastic media is used to provide a high surface area for the micro-organisms to adhere to and also, as it is mobile, to facilitate rapid degradation of solid matter.

The diffused air also operates as an ‘Air Lift’ which recirculates solids from the outer ‘Settlement Chamber’ to the inner ‘Treatment Chamber’. This recirculation also ensures that both chambers remain aerobic. The process runs continuously 24 hours a day.

The plant is designed to conform to the requirements of BS6297.1983

Maintenance

Air blower
The air blower is designed to operate continuously 24 hours a day. As with any thing mechanical it will need maintenance as should be checked regularly

The air filter should be changed annually
The diaphragm should be changed every 3 years
Full maintenance instructions are available as a down load

Integral pump
The pumps should be serviced annually

Checks
Every month you should check the air blower. It should be checked to ensure that it is not running excessively hot. If it is this may indicate blockage in the air delivery system or that the air filter excessively dirty
The integral pump should be checked regularly.

The discharge from the outlet should be clear and odourless. If it is not the following may apply:
Emptying may be required
The plant may be overloaded
There may be chemical interference with the process. E.g. hot fat being poured down the drain, excessive use of house hold cleaning chemicals

Alarms
If an integral pump is fitted it is recommended that a high level alarm is fitted. This comprises a float incorporating a switch and an externally mounted Xenon flashing beacon to alert of pump failure. These are available by special order.
